Uploading your own photo
In the rectangular area showing the big question mark, you will find the instruction: “To upload a picture so that your friends can find you, click here”. Click on the link. You will be taken to a screen where you can browse for your own picture and upload it onto Facebook. You can only choose JPG, GIF or PNG files of size less than or equal to 4 MB. You must check the box “I certify that I have the right to distribute this picture and that it does not violate the Terms of Use” after reading the Terms of Use.
You can also upload your own photo as part of editing your profile. The next subsection, “Editing your profile” should make it clear.

Editing your profile
In order to edit (modify) your profile, you can either click on the “edit” link visible just beside the Profile menu item on the top menu bar, or click the link “Edit my Profile” just below your picture (or the question mark if you have not yet uploaded a picture) while viewing your profile.
Either way, you will be offered the following screen:

Note that the top menu bar contains seven categories. You can fill out various bits and pieces of information about yourself in all these seven categories. The more you fill in, easier it is for your friends to locate you. In some of the categories, you can choose privacy settings for confidential information. For example, consider your phone number under the “Contact” category: you can set a privacy rule for it, thereby controlling who else can view your phone number - only friends or everybody. You can set up independent privacy rules for various details.
The category to the immediate left of the last one is “Picture”. This is the alternative place where you can upload your own photo (alternative to the previous subsection, “Uploading your own photo”)
The right-most category is “Layout”. One of the coolest features of Facebook, the Layout feature allows you to customize how your profile page looks. Try it out!
Amongst all the various categories, let us explore the Education and Work categories in slightly more detail.
